DONGGONGON: Sabah DAP Vice Chairman Edward Ewol Mujie said the burnt down Donggongon market still shows no signs of being rebuilt despite concern expressed by vendors and promises by the Penampang District Council. "It is almost a year now since it was burnt down in a big fire," he said.
He said the hawkers and the Donggongon people raised the matter during their mobile service in the Tamu ground recently. They said they want to move back in to do their business instead of selling their goods in the open. Winnie sympathised with the hawkers who are forced to sell under the hot sun and rain in order to earn a living while the authorities did nothing to help. "At the very least they should start work as soon as possible so that the hawkers can get back to selling their wares inside the market earlier," she said. Mujie said this fully demonstrates the slackness and bad efficiency of the BN government administration.
"A simple burnt down market is taking too long for them to get it back into operation. The rebuilding work should be given a top priority because it is an essential and compulsory building. Donggongon is a fast growing township. The Penampang Council has always been receiving complaints about its bad performance and inefficiency, especially in maintaining cleanliness.
"There's much work to be carried out to improve its capability and work performance. We need a good and hard working District Council with a group of efficient and devoted councillors."
Mujie said the District Officer as Chairman of the Council must spend more time in his work and get his men to perform their respective duties in a responsible manner. He said the civil servant attitude must be changed in order to serve the people well.
"On the part of the state government, they should provide more funding and allocation to replace the broken down garbage trucks because Penampang is famous for its inability to tackle the clearing of rubbish and garbage. "There should be more manpower deployed to keep the cleanliness of the town and at the same time better walkway and pavements. These were some of the feedback we received from the people who approached the PR mobile service in the Donggongon Tamu ground," Mujie said.
