Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) on Tuesday said many people in Sarawak as well as in Sabah have been calling for the opposition to come up with a "straight fight" formula to fight the Barisan Nasional (BN).
Its Youth leader, Edward Dagul said a straight fight against the BN would boost confidence among the people and also synergise opposition campaigners. "If this had been applied, the opposition might have won Ngemah and Telang Usang and other marginal areas where the combined opposition votes outnumber that of BN," he said in a statement.
DAP's Obama-style "Ubah" campaign he said bore elements of the highly successful Taiwanese opposition green-wave in 2000. He said it was a contest between the brilliance and youthfulness of DAP versus the stale and lethargic SUPP, against a back ground of resentment against Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud. Unfortunately, he said this campaign did not reach the rural areas.
He said that SNAP, the only local opposition party in Sarawak, was literally murdered by PKR, its "big brother" in the Pakatan coalition, by offering it only three or four seats of the 71 seats.
He said PKR leaders made blatant lies against SNAP, which are now proven to be completely false. Allegations that SNAP was flushed with funds from Umno were later confirmed to be false by PKR state chief Baru Bian, he said.
Sheer folly, greed or suspicious motives might have driven PKR to contest in all the seats targeted by SNAP, he claimed. The only SNAP seat not disturbed by PKR was Pakan, the seat contested by SPDP (Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party) President, and that was because the PKR candidate did not turn up on nomination day. SNAP on the other hand had backed out from Bakalelan and other areas to give way to the PKR to contest.
