KUCHING: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has made a very wise and accurate decision by re-appointing Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) deputy secretary general Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh as a Cabinet minister. In pointing this out, member of parliament for Serian Datuk Richard Riot, who is also a SUPP Central Working Committee (CWC) member, said the non-representation of the Chinese community in the government could lead to polarisation.
“If the Chinese are not represented in the government, then polarisation will rise and if this occurs, what I fear is that there would be racial tension in the country in the near future and this is what we do not want. “Therefore, in my personal capacity as CWC member and SUPP Serian branch chairman, the appointment of Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh by CM, which is his prerogative, is correct no matter what the oppositions say,” said Riot.
Riot, also Deputy Foreign Minister, told reporters this at a news conference at the Federal Complex when asked to comment on the suggestion by the party’s CWC that its Chinese elected representatives should turn down any appointment as Cabinet minister. The CWC in its meeting recently proposed that any post should be given to the non-Chinese assemblymen since the Chinese community had rejected the party’s candidates in the recent state election when they won only six out the 19 seats it contested.
Of the six seats, only two were won by its Chinese candidates in the persons of Wong in Bawang Assan and Datuk Lee Kim Shin in Senadin albeit wining with the smallest margin. Despite the party suffering its worst defeat, Riot said that there was no reason why Wong, who had successfully retained his seat, should not be re-appointed as a Cabinet minister. “This is why PM (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) came up with the 1Malaysia concept, where under the concept although you have only one representative, you will still represent your community.
“Therefore, the appointment of Dato Sri Wong is the most correct decision,” he added.
On the non-Chinese elected representatives in SUPP, Riot said it was their hope that at least one Bidayuh and one Iban will be given assistant minister posts at the least. “Because the Bidayuhs and Ibans have two seats each, it is our sincere hope that at least one from each community will be appointed at least as an assistant minister. That is my fervent hope because the Bidayuhs for that matter were all out behind the BN. “At least one from each community because I think to expect two is a bit too much. I mean to expect more than one is over asking,” he said.
