Kota Kinabalu: Efforts are under way to register the United Borneo Front (UBF) as a legitimate organisation. "This is a movement that will be registered we are in the process of doing that," said its leader, Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan. Although the group had made strides to distance itself from being a political entity and more of a civil rights body, he said they were free to talk about everything that concerned the Borneo states, including politics. "The purpose we do this is because want everybody's support".
If we were to be a political party, we have to be either the opposition or the Government and that would (mean being) under the current mental set up. "In order to create a new political model, we'll use the movement to bring everybody together, then we will be united (but) UBF will remain a non-political organisation," he said. Pressed on how UBF could bring change and reform without being a political party, Kitingan said the elections were far from their minds.
"When people talk about politics, they talk about elections don't worry about tomorrow, we take care about today first. "I don't want to get into the election mode but as far as the Borneo Agenda is concerned, we will encourage them (political parties) to put the agenda into their manifesto. "(For instance) if a BN component party adopts the agenda, we will support them but it doesn't mean we will join you as a political party.
Don't use the old political model to interpret our struggle," he said. Although heading a non-political movement, Kitingan brushed aside suggestions that he was on a political break, vowing to continue fighting on for the people. "We (UBF) will also be mentoring political proteges.
But we don't want to create enemies but friends we will not attack, our purpose is to unite not divide."
He also said UBF would adopt a new logo. Its previous one of Muruts in harmony was similar to that used in the State Government publication, "Spirit of Borneo", a commemorative book on the historic expeditions of pioneer Hollywood documentary film makers Martin and Osa Johnson to early British North Borneo (now Sabah).
