Kota Kinabalu: Projek Cari, a Federal programme to identify those in need of help in Sabah, has helped increase the number of people receiving various welfare assistance. The new approach, introduced by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, was enforced on Oct 1, 2008 and 150 contract officers were appointed to look for those in need in Sabah.
Some cases were also referred to the relevant agencies for further action like locals without birth certificates or identity cards who were referred to the National Registration Department and those in need of electricity supply who were referred to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), among others.
Disclosing this, Sabah Welfare Services Department Director, Etong Terang, said thanks to Projek Cari, the number of beneficiaries increased by almost 50 per cent from the number of recipients of welfare assistance recorded before October 2008.
"This Projek Cari is like a measure or effort to trace those really in need of government assistance and the implementation of the programme has been very effective. "Before October last year, the total number of recipients of welfare assistance under State and Federal levels was about 18,000. "But after the Projek Cari was launched, the number has increased to about 26,000 recipients up to this year," he said at a press conference here, Wednesday.
Based on Projek Cari figures from Nov 2008 to March 31, this year, he said the total number of cases detected was 20,870 but the status of 14,093 have yet to be determined. As for the rest, Etong said a total of 5,401 (amounting to RM1.62 million) are recipients of Federal welfare assistance, 1,012 (RM202,400) are recipients of State welfare assistance and 364 cases were not approved as the applicants did not meet the criteria to be welfare recipients.
He identified Kota Belud as having the highest number with 4,058 cases with 619 recipients of welfare assistance and 3,426 whose status has not been established yet. Thirteen others were not approved. "It takes some time for us to check the eligibility of the applicants to be recipients of welfare assistance at State level," he said, calling on those who have yet to hear from them to be patient. Etong also called on community leaders at the grassroots level to give their full cooperation to the department's officers in identifying people in need.
