JELEBU: Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) was good at playing "sandiwara" (drama) where the party only dared to contest seats it was confident of winning.
Rais, who is also Jelebu MP, said at the same time the party was not willing to follow the democratic process in certain places like Selangor following the uncovering of the Elizabeth Wong semi-nude pictures. "I think the party thinks that it cannot win the seat (Bukit Lanjan) while in Penang, the situation is different where Umno there is not that well organised and psychologicaly still weak following their loss in the state (Permatang Pauh by-election) some months ago," he told reporters after chairing an Umno meeting, here, Friday.
"They think that if Elizabeth Wong quits, PKR cannot win the seat and has asked the assemblywoman not to resign to avoid a by-election. "By winning a by-election, PKR can work at giving a false picture that the party is now acceptable to the people. "A by-election is like a fiesta to PKR, and this is the season for PKR to play 'sandiwara' and take this opportunity to gain public support," he said.
Rais said after their intelligentsia had analysed their chances, the party was very confident of retaining the Penanti state seat made vacant with the resignation of its incumbent assemblyman and Penang Deputy Chief Minister I, Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin. "They (PKR) will take every opportunity to attract public attention and to hold a by-election. "They should not see themselves as already being accepted by the people at large as the ultimate test will be the general election," he added.- Bernama
