Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has pledged full support for Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to succeed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Deputy President Datuk Chin Su Phin called on Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties to get behind Najib and respect Abdullah's decision to step down in March next year.
He believed that none of the component parties would follow Sabah Progressive Party's (SAPP) footsteps and threaten to pull out of the coalition as Abdullah had kept his word on the transition of power and that Umno was ready to make changes and reform as well.
He regarded Abdullah's decision as brave and which has proven critics wrong for making assumptions that Abdullah would cling to power.
"Today, we can clearly see that Abdullah is a leader of great courage and ready to face any challenges because for him to relinquish the Prime Minister's post is not an easy decision," he told reporters, Tuesday.
"We believe that the Prime Minister is aware of the strong signals from the various BN component parties and the people from the grassroots level," he said.
Chin said the PM had implemented many good policies for the country and the people, and that Abdullah's weaknesses were on certain matters only and no longer an issue.
"We believe that all BN component parties and the people will remember Abdullah's contributions in bringing reform, particularly in Umno that has avoided a split in the party. More importantly, he also saved the BN and the whole country's future.
"This is the time for us in BN to unite and give our full support to incoming Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and hope he will become the Umno President smoothly at the party's general assembly," he said.
He noted that Najib had also been facing negative propaganda from certain quarters who questioned his leadership and capability. "The same happened to Abdullah but all those assumptions turned out wrong."
"I do not think Najib will repeat the mistakes made by Abdullah because Najib will have a clear mind about the whole situation by now," said Chin.
Chin also cautioned that the people will not gain anything but have everything to lose if the Opposition is allowed to take over the present Government.
"We can see that the so-called Pakatan Rakyat, namely the PKR, DAP and PAS have different ideology. And, it is a fact that the DAP and PAS have more seats than the Keadilan (PKR), which means that PKR is not in a position to lead the Pakatan Rakyat.
"How are these three opposition parties with conflicting ideologies going to run the country? Whereas in the BN, Umno has the majority seats and it is in the right position to lead the BN to ensure the stability and strength of the coalition and smooth running of the country," he pointed out.
Chin also reckoned that it was crucial for Malaysia to have a strong BN Government in view of the current global economic crisis, and warned that any change of Government will bring about an adverse impact on the country's economy.
Opposition leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, he said, should wait until the next general election for the people to decide if they want Pakatan Rakyat or the BN to run the country, he said.
Kalau tak cuba, mana tahu tinggi rendahnya langit......
