Tawau: August 31 does not have to be public holiday for Sabah and Sarawak as Sept. 16 has far more significance for both states, said DAP Sri Tanjung Assemblyman, Jimmy Wong Sze Phin.
In a statement here, Wednesday, Wong said Umno and other Barisan Nasional component parties have to accept the fact that Aug. 31 was the date Malaya achieved independence while Sept. 16 was the day Malaysia was formed.
"Both states joined Malaya to form Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963, this is not only history for Sabah and Sarawak but also Malaya," he said and called for the equal treatment of both states as well as being equal partners.
He claimed that many Sabahans and Sarawakians see little significance in Aug. 31 compared to Sept. 16.
As such, Wong said that he fully supported calls for the Government to declare Sept. 16 (Malaysia Day) as a public holiday for all the states in the Federation, adding that this was important towards the creation of a real "Bangsa Malaysia".
