'BN materials vandalised and leaders heckled'
Kota Kinabalu: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is using intimidation and dirty tactics to scare off Barisan Nasional (BN) campaign workers and supporters in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election campaign.
Permatang Pauh Umno Youth chief Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said said even Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek was not spared from vicious taunting by PKR supporters.
According to him, PKR supporters folded RM1 notes and put them inside Shabery's shirt pocket. However, he did not state what the gesture by the opposition supporters was supposed to mean.
"BN posters, banners and flags were damaged and shredded É they were very aggressive," he said, adding that many PKR campaign supporters were imported from elsewhere.
Despite the hostile treatment they received from the opposition, Mohd Zaidi said that they were not perturbed. "The BN's approach is not to retaliate but to offer kindness and patience."
While the BN is having a tough time at Permatang Pauh in trying to convince the people of the Barisan's sincerity, he said support from Umno Sabah and other Sabah BN component parties has been tremendous.
Commending Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Kota Belud MP Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan and PBS Deputy President Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili, he thanked Sabah BN for its strong support.
Abdul Rahman, he said, has been helping in the campaigning for BN candidate Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah since day one.
He said the Permatang Pauh Umno felt really touched with Sabah BN's gesture and commitment.
Some of the Sabah leaders, Mohd Zaidi said, "deliberately" left their respective divisional meetings just to help out in the BN campaign.
"Such is what the BN spirit is all aboutÉcooperation among the various component parties.
"This is totally in contrast to what (PKR candidate for Permatang Pauh) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had claimed that several Sabah BN MPs would be switching over to the opposition," he said.
On voter sentiments, he said although it is too early to predict BN's chances in the by-election, "the voters are beginning to be aware of Anwar's empty promises".
